Rita B. Allen

Dear Colleague,

Competing for talent is an ongoing challenge for many executives. Being creative and current with practices to engage your employees is essential. One such practice is to encourage and support reverse mentoring and incorporate it as a norm within your organizational culture. Reverse mentoring can challenge many traditional views and experiences. It provides an opportunity for organizations to acknowledge that skill gaps exist among all generations and can motivate both younger and more experienced employees to push outside their comfort zones.

Personally, I have learned so much from own experiences with reverse mentoring. I am privileged to have the opportunity to work with many young professionals in a variety of industries. Through these experiences, I have gained much learnings and wisdom being mentored by my younger colleagues. Being the mother of adult children who are in the workforce, I've also had the good fortune of being mentored by my kids. My greatest take-away from all of these encounters is that we never stop learning and learn the most when we open our minds to explore new perspectives. It's helped me to appreciate the value of diversity in a deeper sense. Please read on to see some of the ways I have recently been exposed to reverse mentoring.

Please share your reverse mentoring stories with me and if you have not experienced it, seek out a new mentor or mentee for yourself! Happy Holidays to you and your loved ones! May you have much happiness, good health, and prosperity in the year ahead as we kick off a new decade in 2020!

Best Regards,

Rita Balian Allen

Reverse Mentoring

The range of experiences, assets, beliefs and motivations among the various generations cannot be overstated. These differences add value to how we do our work, communicate and collaborate and can ultimately enhance performance. With these opportunities come potential challenges, but these can be embraced and welcomed to ensure that the benefits greatly outweigh any conflicts. Taking the time to build strong relationships across all generations makes us more valuable as individuals, teams, departments and organizations.

The Value of Reverse Mentoring

Maine Women's Leadership Conference

Annual Maine Women's Leadership Conference was held on September 18th in Portland, ME where I presented on the topic of 'Personal Branding'. It was an impressive group of women representing various industries and professions all invested in advancing and managing their careers.

Martin Trust Center for MIT Entrepreneurship

The last couple of years, I have had the honor of being invited to volunteer as a mock board member at MIT's Martin Trust Center for Entrepreneurship. The Martin Trust Center provides the expertise, support, and connections MIT students need to become effective entrepreneurs. This summer I was inspired as I worked with two young women, Stephanie Rampello and Karina Akib, founders of CaroCare, a provider of postpartum support for parents and baby. Please view their You-Tube clip to learn more. If you or someone you know is interested in this kind of service, I encourage you to reach out to them at www.carocareco.com. A special thank you to Dr. Patricia Cotter for involving me and for her exemplary leadership. Please read more from a blog written by Dr. Cotter.

Boston University International Affairs Association

In October, I had the pleasure of presenting at a career management workshop held at BU with their International Affairs Association. The young men and women I met were incredibly driven to accomplish purposeful goals and aspirations. Working with them and hearing their stories taught me to explore their journeys further as wonderful insight into the future of our workforce.
